COMPETITION CATEGORIES - 2008

 

ASSIGNMENT

          An assigned photograph must conform to the subject, theme or style selected.  Judging will be based on impact, content, photographic ability and the photograph's ability to convey the assignment subject, theme or style.  Photographs entered in this category must have been produced within the previous or current competition year only. 

CREATIVE

          Creative photography is an opportunity for those who dare to explore the experimental and creative forms of photographic expression.  These photographs may include, but are not limited to derived images, ultra-high contrast, black light, bas-relief, solarization, posterization, multiple images, trick lenses and filters, digital enhancement, computer manipulation, and other ways to alter the image to produce a new abstract effect.  Judges will be looking for creativity, impact, composition, technique or style, and concentration of color and/or form. 

NATURE

          A nature photograph depicts observations from all branches of natural history, with the exception of anthropology and archaeology.  Nature may include botany, zoology, or geology when depicted in such a fashion that a well-informed person will be able to identify the subject and to certify to its honest presentation.  Human elements shall not be present unless they enhance the nature story and are unobtrusive.  Photographs of artificially produced or hybrid plants or animals, mounted specimens, set arrangements, derivations, or any form of photographic manipulation that alters the truth are ineligible, with the exception of detailed micro or macro photographs.  Scientific banding is permitted on wild animals.  Photos of captive animals are allowed.  If the subject is wildlife, the entrant may indicate this in the title to the image. 

OPEN COLOR

          This subject matter is wide open and all encompassing.  It may include scenic views, landscapes, waterscapes, still life, informal or formal portraiture, people, photojournalism, nature, photo-travel, pictorial, macro and micro photography, and may include other subject matters not previously mentioned.  This may also include images that may not be acceptable in other competition categories such as hybrid or artificially produced plants or animals, nature and hand of man depiction, etc.  However, mono photographs are not permitted in this category. 

OPEN MONO

            Mono is defined as one color plus white.  Shades of any one color plus white is allowed.  A sepia tone or shades of sepia tone are allowed.  This subject matter is wide open and all encompassing.  It may include scenic views, landscapes, waterscapes, still life, informal or formal portraiture, people, photojournalism, nature, photo-travel, pictorial, macro and micro photography, and may include other subject matters not previously mentioned.  This may also include images that may not be acceptable in other competition categories such as hybrid or artificially produced plants or animals, nature and hand of man depiction, etc.  

PHOTOJOURNALISM

          This subject matter must consist of photographs or sequences of photographs which tells a story.  Such images are seen in the news media, including human interest, documentary, and spot news.  In the interest of actual presentation, artificially produced situations or photographic manipulations which alter the truth should not be submitted.  The story telling value of the photograph shall be weighed more than the pictorial quality.  Titles and captions are required and are an integral part of the judging, as they are read aloud before the photograph is shown. 

PHOTO TRAVEL

          A travel photograph is one which captures the feeling of time and place, and portrays a  land, a people, or culture in its natural state.  Ultra close-ups which lose their identity, studio type model pictures, or obviously manipulated photographs do not qualify for this category.  Photo travel images are not limited to other countries and may include those of domestic origin.

 

2008 COMPETITION GUIDELINES

 

There are two levels of participation for competition, an Advanced Level, otherwise referred to as Level I, and a Basic to Intermediate Level, otherwise referred to as Level II. Members who participate in Level I competition may not move back to Level II. Members may begin in Level II, then advance to Level I when they feel they are ready, but once they have advanced cannot return to Level II. There is only one level for digital and slide entries and it shall be considered as Level I. Only members whose dues are paid currently may enter club competition. Competition media includes digital, prints and slides.

General Guidelines are as follows:

1. All entries must be the original work of the entrant. 2. Once an entry has been accepted in any category, it cannot be entered again in any other category during that competition year. The top 3 winning entries in a given category in the year-end competition may never again be entered in any category. 3. Members may re-enter non-accepted entries in the same or any other OPEN category. 4. All entries must contain the maker's name, image title, and the direction the picture is to be shown. Digital images shall be properly oriented for normal viewing. Slides shall contain the maker’s name, image title, and a spot on the lower left corner of the mount. If the subject is wildlife in the Nature category, the words Non-Captive Wildlife or letters NCW, MAY be added to image title.

Number of Entries

Paid-up members may submit up to four (4) entries in each category and for each media. Paid-up members may submit one (1) entry for each Assignment Category.

Acceptance and Acceptance Points

1. Every entry for competition shall be allowed 1/4 point, whether accepted or not. 2. If there are at least 2 entrants for competition in a given category, each entry accepted by the judges shall be allowed 1 point. 3. If there is only 1 entrant in any category for which competition has been scheduled, that entrant will be allowed 1/4 point for each entry not to exceed 1 point per category. That entrant may withdraw the entries, without prejudice, for later competition. If that entrant has entered 4 photos in that category, that entrant may choose to have the photos judged and earn an additional 1 point for the photo accepted. 4. Winners at the year-end competition shall be allowed 5 points for first place, 4 points for second place, 3 points for third place, and 1 point for honorable mention, in each category. 5. The judges shall accept from 25% to 33% of the total number of entries in each category judged.

Format & Size

1. Prints are not required to be mounted. 2. Prints may be self, commercially, or computer printed. 3. Mounts or backing may be the same size of the print. 4. Mounts, backing or frames may not exceed the maximum size allowed in each level. 5. Entries may not be framed for year-end judging.

Maximum Sizes for Prints

Level I (including mount) 18 x 24 for large print category 8 ˝ x 12 for small print category

Level II (including mount) 8 ˝ x 12

Digital Competition Entries

Entries for digital competition should be submitted to the Competition VP no later than 9:00 pm on the day before the next meeting. No entries will be accepted after the submission deadline.

Digital Image and File Size Requirements

Image format: JPEG (JPG)

Max Image Size for Landscape: 1280 pixels wide x 1024 pixels tall.

Max Image Size for Portraits: 1024 pixels tall.

File Size: 400KB Maximum (per JPG Image file).

Color Space: sRGB

File Names

Digital file names should be in the following format: "Category_ImageTitle_MemberName.jpg" - no spaces between any words.

Example: PJ_MyVacationInMexico_BruceWard.jpg

The Category portion should be abbreviated using the following standard abbreviations:

PJ = Photojournalism

PT = Photo Travel

OC = Open Color

MNO = Mono

NTR = Nature

CRTV = Creative

ASSIGN = Assignment

If the subject is wildlife in the Nature category, the letters “NCW”, MAY be added to image title. Example:

NTR_NCW_YellowstoneBears_BruceWard.jpg
